September 23rd is “Sensei Viola Day” in Pittsburgh celebrating the 50 year anniversary of the Allegheny Shotokan Viola Karate Dojo (The parent to Norwin Ninjas).

“Sensei Viola Day” is a designated day honoring Bill Viola Sr., the pioneering founder of Allegheny Shotokan Karate, recognized officially by Allegheny County, PA.

  • In September 2019, Allegheny County officially proclaimed September 23 as Sensei Viola Day, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the dojo established in 1969 by Bill Viola Sr.

  • The date also coincided with the birthday of Viola Jr.’s son, William Viola IV


Who is Bill Viola Sr.?

  • He founded Allegheny Shotokan Karate (aka Viola Karate) at East Allegheny High School in 1969

  • Viola Sr. is celebrated as a co-creator of modern MMA, having co-founded CV Productions and created the “Tough Guy” contests in 1980—years before the UFC

  • He was inducted into the USA Karate Hall of Fame (Man of the Year, 2003) and recognized by the Western PA Sports Museum and Heinz History Center (Smithsonian affiliate)
