The Christmas Kumite
The Christmas Kumite is a long-running holiday martial arts tournament traditionally held in Western Pennsylvania during the Christmas season. The event became known for bringing together karate, kickboxing, and sport-karate competitors in a festive but highly competitive atmosphere just before the end of the year.

The tournament is closely tied to the Western Pennsylvania martial arts scene that grew in the 1970s–1990s. Promoters and instructors such as Bill Viola Sr. helped build a strong regional tournament circuit that featured events throughout the year, with the Christmas Kumite serving as a year-end championship-style gathering for many schools.
What Made It Unique
The Christmas Kumite stood out because it combined:
-
Holiday spirit with serious competition
-
Karate point sparring and forms divisions
-
Kickboxing and full-contact bouts in some years
-
Top regional talent from Pennsylvania, Ohio, and the East Coast
Many competitors treated it as a final test of the year, where students and champions could showcase the progress they made during the season.
Connection to the Pittsburgh Martial Arts Scene
Western Pennsylvania has long been a hotbed for sport karate and kickboxing. Events like the Christmas Kumite helped feed the growth of later promotions such as the Kumite Classic, which became one of the region’s best-known martial arts competitions.
Through this network of tournaments, athletes also connected with international organizations like World Association of Kickboxing Organizations, helping Pittsburgh fighters gain national and world-level opportunities.
Christmas Kumite
Atmosphere
Unlike many tournaments, the Christmas Kumite had a community feel:
-
Schools would bring entire teams of students
-
Families and spectators packed the gym
-
Holiday decorations and music created a festive vibe
-
Competitors often saw it as a celebration of the martial arts year
For many martial artists in the region, winning at the Christmas Kumite meant ending the year on top.
