Kumite Classic Celebrates 25 Years of Martial Arts Excellence

Pittsburgh, PA – In 2025, the Kumite Classic proudly commemorates its 25th anniversary, marking a quarter-century as one of America’s most prestigious and enduring martial arts events. Founded in 1999 by martial arts promoter and author Bill Viola Jr., the Kumite Classic has evolved from a regional tournament into a nationally recognized brand synonymous with sportsmanship, discipline, and world-class competition. He is the owner and operator of Norwin Ninjas martial arts in Pittsburgh, PA.

Over the past two and a half decades, the Kumite Classic has welcomed thousands of athletes from across the globe, becoming a cornerstone of the martial arts community and a launching pad for elite competitors. The event has showcased a wide range of disciplines including traditional karate, kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, kung fu, and modern sport karate, reflecting the diversity and growth of the martial arts world.

This milestone year also saw the Kumite Classic take center stage at the Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio—one of the largest multi-sport expos in the world—where it hosted the WAKO USA National Championships, the official team trials for Team USA Kickboxing. The partnership further elevated the event’s profile, aligning it with Olympic-caliber competition under the sanctioning of WAKO (World Association of Kickboxing Organizations), recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

“Reaching 25 years is more than a milestone—it’s a testament to the passion, persistence, and people who have made the Kumite Classic what it is today,” said Bill Viola Jr., whose lifelong mission has been to empower youth through martial arts. “From our humble beginnings in Pittsburgh to the international stage, the journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.”

The anniversary not only celebrates the legacy of the past, but also looks to the future. With a focus on youth development, gender equality in combat sports, and Olympic aspirations, the event continues to be a driving force in martial arts innovation and excellence.
