Goal: Deny the takedown by removing the legs from reach and applying weight on the attacker.
Key Components:
Quick reaction to the shot.
Hips drop down hard into the attacker.
Chest pressure applied to push the attacker’s head down.
Legs move back and wide to maintain balance.
Follow-ups:
Spin behind to take the back.
Front headlock setup.
Guillotine choke (especially in BJJ).
They form a key offensive/defensive pairing in grappling exchanges. Learning both is crucial for stand-up grappling in both wrestling and BJJ.
In both wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), the terms “shoot” and “sprawl” refer to opposite movements that are essential for takedown offense and defense.
Definition: A shoot is an aggressive forward movement where a grappler lowers their level and drives toward the opponent’s legs to secure a takedown (e.g., single leg, double leg).

Common Setups:
Double-leg takedown: Both legs are targeted; the grappler lifts or drives through the opponent.
Single-leg takedown: Only one leg is grabbed; the attacker may lift or trip the opponent.
Key Components:
Lower level with a strong posture.
Step deep with the lead leg.
Drive through using hips and legs.
Finish by lifting, tripping, or turning the opponent.
Used in: Both wrestling and BJJ, especially in gi-less (no-gi) grappling.

In essence: Tegumi (hands grappling) can be seen as a specific, older form of grappling that influenced the development of martial arts in Okinawa, while Jujutsu is a broader term for a family of martial arts that includes grappling, striking, and throwing techniques.
Kumite (grappling hands) 組手 we know as sparring. Its literal translation is grappling hands, crossing of hands or is easiest terms: hand-to-hand. When the kanji is reversed 手組 we get Tegumi. So one essentially is sparring on our feet, the other is sparring on the ground.
