Position: The top grappler is lying perpendicular to the opponent, chest-to-chest, controlling their upper body.
Control: Strong top position, not quite as dominant as mount but more stable than guard.
Top Grappler’s Goal:
Control hips and shoulders.
Transition to mount or attack with submissions (e.g., kimura, arm triangle).
Bottom Grappler’s Goal:
Escape to guard or regain knees.
Avoid getting mounted.
Side control is like “pinning sideways” — your weight is across your opponent, stopping their movement.
Position: The bottom grappler is on their back with their legs wrapped around the top grappler.
Control: The bottom person actually has more control here, especially in BJJ.
Types:
Closed Guard: Legs locked behind the opponent’s back.
Open Guard / Half Guard: Legs not fully locked; often used for sweeps or submissions.
Bottom Grappler’s Advantage:
Can attack with submissions (triangles, armbars) or sweeps.
Top Grappler’s Goal:
Break the guard and pass to side control or mount.
Guard is unique because the person on bottom can still be attacking.
Position: The top grappler is sitting on the torso of the opponent, knees on the mat, straddling them.
Control: Very dominant position for the top person.
Top Grappler’s Advantage:
Strong control of hips and posture.
Easy to strike (in MMA) or apply submissions (like armbars, chokes).
Bottom Grappler’s Goal:
Escape (e.g., by bridging and rolling or shrimping).
Reestablish guard or another defensive position.
Think of mount as “king of the hill” — you’re on top, and it’s hard for the bottom person to move.
Position | Who’s on Top? | Control Level | Bottom Person Can Attack? | Top Person Can Submit? |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mount | Person in control | Very High | Difficult | Yes |
Guard | Person on bottom | Neutral | Yes | Yes, but Limited |
Side Control | Person on side | Strong | Not easily | Yes |
