BREAK FALL

In Japanese, a breakfall is called ukemi (受け身). Ukemi refers to the art of falling safely and is a fundamental skill in many Japanese martial arts, including judo, aikido, and jiu-jitsu. The term combines “uke” (meaning to receive) and “mi” (meaning body), signifying the act of receiving the fall with the body.

O-Soto Gari

Step behind sweep: pronounced "Gah Rhee"

O-Soto Gari, also known as “Major Outer Reap,” AKA SWEEP is a fundamental Judo/Karate powerful sweeping motion to unbalance and throw an opponent. Executed by stepping

1. (Breaking Balance): Kuzushi
  • The first step is to break the opponent’s balance, typically by pulling them forward and to the side.

  • This can be achieved by pulling on the sleeve and collar, creating an off-balance posture.

2. (Entry):
  • The attacking leg (right leg for a right-handed throw) steps forward and slightly to the side, positioning the attacker’s hip close to the opponent’s hip.

  • The attacker’s leg should be close enough to their opponent’s, but not so close as to impede the sweep.

  • The attacker’s chest and hip should be in close contact with the opponent’s body.

3. (Execution):
  • The attacker’s leg sweeps behind the opponent’s leg, hooking the back of their thigh.

  • The sweep should be powerful and controlled, using a combination of hip extension and leg movement.

  • The attacker pulls the opponent forward and down as the leg sweeps, causing them to fall.

4. (Finishing):

  • The attacker continues the sweep, bringing their leg through and extending it to ensure the opponent falls to the mat.
  • The attacker’s body weight is used to drive the opponent down.
  • The attacker maintains contact with the opponent throughout the throw and follows them to the ground, ensuring a safe and controlled fall.
